One-stop shop clean up event set for Oct. 1

Whether you have junk to chunk, tree limbs to mulch, or documents to shred Oct 1 is proving to be the day you can accomplish all three. This year the city’s Environmental Services Department has combined its bi-annual Beautification Day event with its Shred Day event.

The collection is 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct 1, at the Chris W. Burkett Service Center, 620 S. Wisteria St. With the new Environmental Collection Center, it’s never been easier to Keep Mansfield Beautiful.

“Beautification Day is typically a day focused on giving residents the opportunity to get rid of bulky trash and junk that may be causing an eyesore in their community simply because they have nowhere to dispose of it,” said Stephanie Zavala, public education specialist for the city. “It just made sense to include a shredding event.  The Environmental Collection Center not only provides a one-stop shop most cities our size do not have access to, but also serves as a venue for related events such as this one.”

The Environmental Collection Center opened in November 2015. In less than a year the center has collected more than 33,000 pounds of material.  This is a significant increase from just 5,000 pounds collected the year prior.  Mansfield had contracted with the City of Fort Worth’s Environmental Collection Center to provide on-site trailers for collections.  Those bi-annual events often meant long lines for residents, and with some even turned away when the trailers were full.

The Environmental Collection Center is primarily for Household Hazardous Waste or HHW.  The city will not be collecting HHW on Beautification Day, however the ECC and adjacent Chris W. Burkett Service Center provide ample real estate in which to host the Beautification Day event.  The service center, which also opened in November 2015, has become the local hub for educational programming and events such as the H2Grow Festival held last spring, as well as a free meeting place for community groups such as the Mansfield Garden Club and Keep Mansfield Beautiful.

If you are planning to take advantage of Beautification Day, bring things such as bulky items, junk, trash (bagged), scrap metal, appliances and any other items that may be too large for curbside pickup. Tires are also accepted and will be disposed of at no cost.  If you have gently used furniture or clothing that needs a new home, you can donate these items at the Wesley Mission Center Thrift Shop, 777 N. Walnut Creek Drive, prior to the event.

Tree limbs and brush may be brought to the free mulch site at 24 N. Mitchell Road from 8 a.m. to noon.

The Shred Day event allows residents to bring sensitive records and papers for safe disposal in order to prevent identity theft. The shredding is done onsite by a large commercial shredder.  Participants are limited to 10 boxes of paper.  This service is for individuals only, please; no businesses.

Be sure to bring proof of residency (driver’s license or utility bill) in order to participate in the collection events or have access to the center.   Contractors and businesses will be turned away.

Household Hazardous Waste will not be collected at this event. Save your paint, pesticides, CFL light bulbs, used motor oil and more for the next HHW collection event the second Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.  For more information about HHW collection events or a full list acceptable items, please visit
