SmartAsset names Mansfield a top city in Texas to raise a family

The City of Mansfield is one of the best places in Texas to raise a family, according to a new study by consumer finance website SmartAsset.

Mansfield was ranked fifth among the 87 Texas cities surveyed in the “Best Places to Raise a Family in Texas” study by SmartAsset. Officials at the website said they looked at several key factors that define the livability of cities in Texas for families.

“Families love Mansfield and Mansfield loves families,” said Mayor David L. Cook. “And that is perfectly illustrated when you go to our parks and athletic facilities, to our library and to our special events. You can see families enjoying our community and celebrating their lives. It’s great that SmartAsset recognizes Mansfield’s commitment to making a difference in the lives of families.”

According Smart Asset’s research, Mansfield’s low crime rate, low family poverty rate and high concentration of young people indicate it is an attractive community for families.

“It has a low family poverty rate of 4.4 percent,” said Derek Miller with SmartAsset. “About 32 percent of the city’s population is under the age of 20. It’s also one of the safest cities in our study. According to the FBI data, Mansfield has a crime rate of 1,617 per 100,000 residents. That’s the fifth best score in our Top 10.”

“We continue to see the positive results of planning by city councils, community leaders and city staff,” said City Manager Clayton Chandler. “From outstanding city services like our award-winning park system to our strong local economy, we are building a quality of life that draws families to our community.”

Other specifics in the SmartAsset study had Mansfield with a graduation rate at 93 percent and median monthly housing costs at $1,510.

The other cities in the Top 10 were 1) Leander, 2) Frisco, 3) Southlake, 4) McKinney, 6) Grapevine, 7) Keller, 8) Georgetown, 9) Round Rock and 10) Pearland.

The City of Mansfield, located in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, is one of the fastest growing communities in Texas, with a population of more than 68,000. Its growth over the past decade is attributed to its high quality of life, excellent schools and strong local economy and business environment.  The city was ranked by Money Magazine as one of the Best Places to Live in America in 2007, 2009, 2012 and 2014.
