Parks & Rec scores an “A” for its Coffee + Crayons teacher appreciation event

Back to school shopping for your kids means new backpacks, new shoes and tons of school supplies. But kids aren’t the only ones stocking up for the new year. On average, teachers spend nearly $500 out-of-pocket to supply their classrooms, filling the gaps left by school budgets and families unable to provide supplies.

With that in mind Mansfield Parks and Recreation created Coffee + Crayons, a teacher appreciation event where vendors join with the Mansfield Activities Center to help out teachers in a big way. Each $5 ticket includes a bag of supply goodies, coffee and treats to enjoy with friends, plus a chance to win more prizes. Participating businesses provide the supplies and are on hand to pass them out. The second annual Coffee + Crayons teacher appreciation event is 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, at the Mansfield Activities Center, 106 S. Wisteria St.

Every teacher I know spends their own money on classroom supplies,” said Kelly Binz, a teacher at Mansfield ISD’s J.L. Boren Elementary. “I love any program that helps cut down on those costs.”

This year, the Coffee + Crayons event is open to teachers from all districts, not just MISD.

“The vendors we have cannot wait to show their appreciation,” said MAC Program Coordinator Mary Jones. “With MISD hosting the Back to School Bash for students, this gave the city an opportunity to really cater to the teachers with Coffee + Crayons. This is the second year for us doing the event, and we are expecting a great turn-out.”

The sponsoring businesses represent a mix between local independent shops and big corporations. But they are all coming together with the same goal in mind; to save these teachers some money. Spaces to participate as a vendor are limited but a few slots remain open. Contact Mary Jones at [email protected] for more information.

The price is $5 per teacher, and you can save $1 with a current MAC card. Registration is online now and limited to the first 150 people. Walk-up registration will be accepted at the door as space allows.

“Teachers need stuff like this.” said Xavier Jones, a Fort Worth ISD paraprofessional. “I love the fact that I can save some dollars at the beginning of the school year.”
