Mansfield hits the ice with the opening of the city’s newest sports facility

From the expansive fields at Big League Dreams to the sold-out triathlons at Hawaiian Falls, it’s no secret Mansfield kids are an active bunch. Starting this month, they’ve got an even cooler option for recreation and competition. And what’s cooler than ice?

City leaders, community members and hockey legends will gather Thursday, Aug. 30, to officially open StarCenter Mansfield, much to the delight of ice fans everywhere but especially those close to home.

“We are extremely excited about the new rink opening in Mansfield,” said Mansfield mom Dylan Highfield, whose 10-year-old son plays competitive hockey and currently practices in Euless. “We know that the Mansfield Hockey Association team is one of the best around and are so excited to see them get their own rink to practice and call their own. We also love the fact that this rink will be a great addition to the City of Mansfield with more recreational activities for our kids, adults and families to participate in. Some think an ice rink is just for hockey, but there is so much more to it.”

There is much more, in fact, including free events for the two weeks surrounding the grand opening as a way to get the community exposed to and excited about the new 80,000-square-foot facility.

“We are so excited to finally open our doors to the community,” said Kendall Cogen, marketing coordinator for the Dr. Pepper StarCenters. “The free skating events are less about promotion and more about a way to give everyone a sneak peek at the gorgeous facility.”

Immediately following the grand opening, StarCenter Mansfield will host a major tournament drawing teams from across the country for a weekend-long event. Rink officials expect the facility to host 2-3 similar tournaments each year for a wide range of ages, each drawing hundreds of teams. It will also be the home rink for Mansfield Hockey Association, who will use the rink for practices and games.

In addition to hockey, StarCenter Mansfield will offer figure skating lessons for beginners to competitive, as well as birthday parties and adult recreational leagues. The 3,000 square foot event space is designed for corporate meetings and special event rentals, where guests can skate, play pickup hockey or, for the less athletic, a friendly game of broom ball. Altogether, officials expect to see approximately 270,000 visitors come through the doors each year.

“The most important thing for people to know is that the StarCenter has a lot to offer, even for people who have never skated before,” Cogen said. “We just can’t wait to open up and become a part of the Mansfield community.”

Visitors, and the revenue they bring, are great for any city. But many residents are excited for the new facility not for what it means to tourists, but the impact it will have right here in Mansfield.

“My family loves the hockey community,” said Highfill. “It is a tight knit, inclusive and fun community that is a lot more than just a bunch of hockey jocks. It teaches my kids about being a part of a team, participation and good sportsmanship. But also, the StarCenter really does have a place for everyone in our community even if it’s just for a fun Friday night family free-skate or attending a birthday party. Once you get on the ice, you’ll see what we’re all so crazy about.”
