Crews will move traffic on East Broad Street between U.S. 287 and Cannon Drive to the newly-constructed pavement next week.
The new concrete lanes on the north side of the roadway are expected to be open Tuesday, Aug. 28, with construction on the south side lanes beginning once the two-way traffic has been completely moved to the north side. The project, which is currently being expanded from a four-lane, divided thoroughfare to a six-lane, divided thoroughfare, is expected to be completed late November.
Drivers are asked to use caution in the area due to the new lane configurations.
“Traffic will move differently as work transitions to the south side lanes,” said David Boski, assistant director of public works-transportation. “While there is still construction on East Broad, it will be a better drive with the new pavement. City staff is working with the contractor closely to ensure that the remainder of the project moves quickly and efficiently.”
The expansion began in November 2017 with an initial completion date of Aug. 15, 2018. The relocation of utilities to underground lines proved challenging and caused delays. The project was already three months delayed when city inspectors required the contractor to reconstruct portions of the new westbound lanes due to concerns over improper roadway drainage.
Other improvements include a traffic signal at Regency Parkway and East Broad Street and dual left-turn lanes on eastbound East Broad Street at Cannon Drive.
“This section of East Broad Street is being completely reconstructed, not only improving traffic flow for The Shops at Broad but giving this stretch of East Broad Street a badly needed makeover,” said Bart VanAmburgh, director of public works. “Obviously the new retail and commercial development at this intersection will generate more traffic. One of the project purposes is to make entering and exiting the center safe and efficient.”
The first openings at The Shops at Broad are beginning this month, starting with the grand opening of StarCenter Mansfield on Aug. 30. Academy Sports + Outdoors and At Home are looking at October debuts.
