Artists sought for Earth Day rain barrel auction

Earth Day organizers are looking for artists who want to showcase their talent on a different kind of canvas.

Painted rain barrels sold in a silent auction are an Earth Day highlight. The Keep Mansfield Beautiful Commission, in partnership with the city’s water utilities and environmental services departments, is currently taking applications from artists to participate in the rain barrel painting contest.

“This contest serves as a kickoff to the month-long activities leading up to Earth Day Mansfield,” said Rebecca Sales, the city’s water and environmental public education specialist. “The rain barrel auction is very popular. People enjoy seeing what the artists design.”

This is the third year for Earth Day Mansfield, set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at the Chris W. Burkett Service Center, 620 S. Wisteria St.

Artists will be provided with a 55-gallon, fully-assembled plastic rain barrel and a $25 gift card for painting supplies. They will be chosen based on their creative design and application form responses. Artists selected will be featured on the Keep Mansfield Beautiful Facebook page.

All proceeds will benefit future Keep Mansfield Beautiful projects. The artist who’s barrel receives the highest bid will be declared the grand prize winner and receive a $100 gift card.

Application for the rain barrel contest is now available online. There is no charge to participate, and applications must be received by March 15.
